If your lotion has a paragraph of ingredients, that’s a red flag… not a skincare routine.
Did you know that up until about the 1960's tallow IS what soap and lotion was? Some of you finely aged folks may even remember your grandparents bath tub had a soap ring on it, that's because they used real soap. Then someone came along and said hey lets use petroleum based products to strip skin of its natural barriers, thus skin conditions were born.
WHY TALLOW + WHAT IS IT?
Tallow is a fancy word for fat. Ya, super cool right? There are a lot of forms of tallow, beef, deer, bear, buffalo, etc. Beef tallow is basically the OG skincare ingredient your great-great-grandparents would recognize instantly—and your modern skin barrier will thank you for. Here’s the “what, why, and how”
THE WHAT
What is tallow?
Tallow is rendered beef fat—cleaned, purified, and transformed from “raw” to “ready for skin.” Think of it like this: it’s butter’s tougher, more outdoorsy cousin… with better moisturizing stamina.
THE HOW
How is tallow made?
Tallow is made by rendering: gently melting beef fat and separating out impurities.
The simplified process:
- Start with quality fat (often suet—fat around the kidneys—because it’s cleaner and harder).
- Slow heat melts the fat without scorching it.
- Strain out solids and impurities.
- Cool it into a smooth, creamy solid.
- (Optional) Repeat rendering for extra purity and a milder scent.
- Result: a stable, shelf-friendly fat that’s excellent in soap and skincare.
We do a minimum of 3 renderings, we go that extra mile for you guys.
Why use tallow on skin?
-
It supports your skin barrier like a pro
When your skin barrier is weak, everything gets in: irritation, dryness, redness, “why do I suddenly react to air?” Tallow is rich in skin-loving lipids that help naturally lock in moisture.
-
It moisturizes without the greasy regret
A good tallow balm or lotion can feel deeply nourishing without turning you into a human slip-n-slide—especially when it’s whipped properly and balanced with other oils/butters.
-
It’s packed with naturally occurring fat-soluble nutrients
Tallow naturally contains compounds associated with skin support (like fat-soluble vitamins and fatty acids). Translation: your skin gets fed, not fooled.
-
Great for “my skin is picky” people
Many folks with sensitive or dry skin prefer simpler formulas. Tallow skincare often uses fewer ingredients, which can mean fewer chances for your skin to throw a tantrum.
-
It’s time-tested and practical
Long before “clinical glow” was a phrase, people used animal fats for protection against harsh conditions—wind, cold, sun, dry climates—because it works.
“I’ve always made tallow because I’m a chef. When psoriasis covered me, I started using it on my skin and kept giving it away—raw tallow, simple as that. Today, I’m two-thirds cured. The testimonials from mothers and their kids keep us moving. We do this because it works, and because honoring old recipes honors us.”
